Selmer Series 10G Soprano Clarinet
The story behind the 10G is that it was modeled after Philadelphia Principle Clarinetist Anthony Gigliotti's Buffet R13. There is no shortage of debate on whether these horns are in fact superior to the R13, and some say Selmer couldn't match Gigliotti's horn because his had cutom work done to it by Hans Moening, the type of finishing work not cost effective at the volume Selmer needed to manufacture horns.
However, I can say that this 80's era horn, a late model in the run, featured the surprisingly even scale these horns were designed to produce. E' to E''' played in tune with virtually no embouchure adjustments, and the throat tones, particularly the Bb, sounded refreshingly clear. Amongst the debated traits of this horn is its big, bright, and resonant tone. I found it to be resonant for sure, and big, but not bright, I'd say it was one of the darker clarinets I've played. Regardless of its color, it was thrilling to play a horn with such an even scale that was so easily produced. Another horn I wish was my own leaves the shop.
